The Northern Netherlands area is the largest ‘living lab’ in Europe when it comes to the development of autonomous transportation. In this 11,000 km² region with a population of two million, ideas and concepts have become reality for as long as three years now. The Provinces of Fryslân, Groningen and Drenthe offer autonomous transportation projects literally plenty of working space – not in a simulated or restricted setting, yet in a real traffic environment. The Northern Netherlands area is the only region in Europe, where autonomous transportation is being developed and tested within each of its four modalities: on the road, by rail, on the water and by air.
